Welcome to Dawson County

Dawson County is in central-eastern Montana. The population of Dawson County is approximately 8,904 and includes the communities of Richey, West Glendive and Glendive. We are home to the largest state park in Montana, Makoshika State park! Where there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy like hiking, biking, camping and disc golf. Agriculture is a large aspect of our community, with 1,132,990 acres of farm land raising livestock and/or crops. MSU Extension in Dawson County provides services for the 4-H program, agriculture, horticulture and community development.

What is Extension?

Universities engage in research and teaching, but land-grant universities like Montana State University have a third critical mission - Extension. Extension means out reach and "extending" resources, solving public needs with university resources through collaboration, workshops and programing.

The Montana State University Extension Service is an educational resource dedicated to improving the quality of people's lives by providing research-based knowledge to strengthen the social, economic and environmental well-being of families, communities, and agriculture.

The Dawson County Extension office provides services in the following areas:

  • 4-H & Youth Development
  • Agriculture and Horticulture
  • Soil & Nitrate Testing
  • Water Tests
  • Insect Identification
  • Plant Identification & Disease Diagnostics
  • Montana Private Pesticide Applicators Licensing and Education
